The story of Addison
Addison began as an English surname. It meant “son of Addy”, and Addy was a medieval pet form of Adam. The essayist Joseph Addison, who wrote for The Spectator in the early 1700s, is the best-known bearer of the surname.
As a first name it was once used for boys. It became a girls’ name in the United States in the 2000s, helped by its likeness to Madison and Allison, and by Addison Montgomery, a character in the television series Grey’s Anatomy.
In Ireland Addison first reached three babies a year in 2007. Its biggest year was 2019, with 19 girls, and its best rank was number 231 in 2020. It has become less common since, with 6 girls in 2025. It did a little better in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 142 in 2023.
