The story of Antonio

Antonio is the Italian and Spanish form of the name that became Anthony in English. Both go back to Antonius, the name of an old Roman family. Its meaning is not known. The family name probably came into Latin from Etruscan, a language of ancient Italy that is still only partly understood.

The name is common wherever Romance languages are spoken, from Italy, Spain and Portugal to Latin America, and it is also used in the Balkans. The composer Antonio Vivaldi is one of its best-known bearers.

Antonio has been given in Ireland in small numbers for a long time. It first reached the CSO list in 1967, and that year also gave it its best rank, number 222. It has become a little more common since then, and its biggest year was 2024, with 11 boys. In Northern Ireland its best rank was 291, in 2011.
