The story of Aoibhí
Aoibhí is a new name, and we have not found a reliable account of where it comes from. It looks closely related to Aoibhe, a form of Aoife, and to the old Irish word aoibh, which means beauty or a pleasant expression, a smile. Its long “í” at the end gives it a lighter, brighter sound than Aoibhe, but whether it was built on purpose from aoibh or simply grew out of the older names is unclear.
What is clear is how quickly it has arrived. Aoibhí first reached three babies a year in 2020, and it had its best year yet in 2025, when 19 girls were given it. That put it at number 226 on the CSO list.
It has taken off in Northern Ireland too, where 11 girls were named Aoibhí in 2025. The CSO counts Aoibhe, Aoibhinn and Aoibheann as separate names, so the “Aoibh” family as a whole is much bigger.
