The story of Aoibhinn

Aoibhinn is the everyday Irish word for delightful or blissful, used as a name. The word goes back to Old Irish oíbind, pleasant or delightful, and it is related to aoibh, a word for beauty or a pleasant look. Aoibheann is a closely related name, and both are traced to the same Old Irish name, Aíbinn.

Aoibhinn reached the CSO list in 1982 and grew steadily through the 2000s. The most babies came in 2011, with 128 girls. Its best rank followed in 2012, when it was number 56.

The CSO recorded no fadas before 2018, so the figures above combine every spelling. Since then a spelling with a fada on the second i, Aoibhínn, has been counted separately. In 2025 there were 19 girls named Aoibhinn and 11 named Aoibhínn. The name is less common in Northern Ireland, where its best place was number 123 in 2015.
