The story of Aria
Aria is best known as the word for a solo song in opera, from the Italian for “air”. As an English first name it belongs to the twenty-first century, and it is usually explained that way. Similar-sounding names exist in other languages, such as the Persian Arya, meaning noble, and Hebrew names linked with the word for lion, but these have separate roots.
The name spread in English through television and fantasy fiction, where several characters are called Aria.
In Ireland, Aria first reached the CSO list in 2009, with three girls. The most babies came in 2018, with 103 girls, though its best rank was number 58 in 2023. It has been more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached 22nd in 2024.
