The story of Callum

Callum is a spelling of the Scottish Gaelic Calum, which comes from the Latin Columba, meaning dove. It is the same name as the Irish Colm. As a surname, Callum can also be a shortened form of McCallum.

The name honours Saint Columba, known in Ireland as Colm Cille. Born in the sixth century in Tír Chonaill, he founded monasteries in Ireland before settling on the island of Iona around 563. The abbey he built there became a major centre of the Church, and he is one of the patron saints of Ireland along with Patrick and Brigid.

Callum reached the CSO list in 1989 and rose fast. Its best year came in 2006 with 368 babies, when it was number 22. It was even stronger in Northern Ireland, where it reached 8th that year.
