The story of Celine
Celine is the French name Céline without its accent. It goes back to the Latin name Caelina, from the Roman family name Caelius, which is usually linked with caelum, the Latin word for heaven or sky. In France it can also be a short form of Marceline.
Two early saints of Roman Gaul bore the name, which helped keep it in use in France. The singer Céline Dion made it familiar far beyond French-speaking countries.
In Ireland it was a steady choice in the 1960s and 1970s, and peaked in 1971 with 61 girls. It then faded, falling to just 3 girls a year in the early 2010s. Recently it has come back: 18 girls were named Celine in 2025, up from 4 in 2021.
