The story of Daisy
Daisy comes straight from the flower. The plant’s English name goes back to the Old English dægeseage, “day’s eye”. It is one of the flower names that parents took up for girls in the nineteenth century.
It has a second history too, as a pet form of Margaret. The French form of Margaret, Marguerite, is also the French word for the daisy, and the nickname grew out of that link.
In Ireland Daisy was a rare choice for a long time. It first reached the CSO list in 1979, and only a handful of girls a year were given it until the 2000s. It has climbed steadily since. Its best year so far was 2024, when 109 girls were named Daisy and it reached number 42 on the CSO list. It has done even better in Northern Ireland, where it was 33rd that same year.
