The story of Damir
Damir has more than one root. In the Balkans it is read as a Slavic name made of da-, to give, and mir, peace, so “giver of peace”. In Central Asia and the Turkic regions of Russia it is treated as a form of Demir, meaning iron. In the Soviet period it was also explained as an acronym for a revolutionary slogan.
The name was very popular in Croatia from the 1960s to the 1990s, and it is common among Bosniaks and Serbs too. Well-known bearers include the Bosnian tennis player Damir Džumhur and the Croatian rower Damir Martin.
Damir first appears in the CSO records in 2016, given to three boys. It has grown steadily since, and 2025 was its best year so far, with 19 boys in 2025 and a place at number 244.
