Dillon began as an Irish surname. It is traditionally traced to a Norman knight, Sir Henry de Leon, whose family took its name from the Viscounty of Léon in Brittany. It is related to the surname Lyon.
Dillon sounds just like Dylan, and many people treat them as two spellings of one name, but they are not related. Dylan is a Welsh name from legend, while Dillon comes from a place in France. The CSO counts the two as separate names.
Dillon first appears in the CSO records in 1980. Its best year was 1997, when 69 boys were given it and it reached number 86. It was well used through the 2000s and has become rare since. Only 3 boys were named Dillon in 2025. In Northern Ireland it also did best in 1997, reaching number 104.
