The story of Eliza

Eliza is a shortened form of Elizabeth, which comes from the Hebrew Elisheba, usually explained as “my God is an oath”. It was a popular name in its own right in the nineteenth century, when it was often used on its own rather than as a nickname.

Its best-known bearer in fiction is Eliza Doolittle, the flower seller in George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion and the musical My Fair Lady based on it.

In Ireland Eliza first reached the CSO list in 1969 but stayed very rare until the 2000s. It had the most babies in 2012, with 48 girls, and its best rank was number 123 in 2023. In 2025, 27 girls were named Eliza. It is more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached 70th in 2024. Elizabeth, Eloise and other related names are counted separately by the CSO.
