The story of Eoin
Eoin is the Irish form of John. It came into Irish from the Latin Iohannes, which goes back through Greek to a Hebrew name meaning “God is gracious”. Irish uses it for every John in the Bible, so the Gospel of John is Soiscéal Eoin. Seán is another Irish form of the same name.
Eoin is often confused with Eoghan, and many people say the two alike, but they are unrelated names. Well-known bearers include Eoin MacNeill, the scholar who helped found the Gaelic League, and the children’s author Eoin Colfer.
Eoin was already in use when the CSO records begin, and it climbed steadily for forty years. Its best year was 2004, when 429 boys were named Eoin and it stood at number 14. It has fallen away since, to number 106 in 2025 on the CSO’s own ranking. The CSO also lists the older spelling Eóin separately, and it has now all but disappeared.
