The story of Fia

Fia is the modern Irish spelling of the word for a deer, and it can also mean wild. It comes from the Old Irish fíad, a word for wild animals and game, especially deer. Fiadh is the older spelling of the same word, so the two names share their meaning and are said the same way.

Fia was the first of the pair to catch on. It first appears in the CSO records in 1998, and it grew through the 2000s. It had most babies in 2014, with 43, and its best rank was number 136 in 2017. Since then its sister spelling Fiadh has overtaken it to become one of the most popular girls’ names in Ireland.

In 2025, 18 girls were named Fia. The CSO counts spellings separately, and a handful have been registered as Fía since fadas began to be recorded. The name is also found in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 191 in 2025.
