Gabriella is the Italian feminine form of Gabriel, made by adding the ending -a. Gabriel is a Hebrew name, usually explained as “God is my strength”. In the Bible, Gabriel is the archangel who brings messages from God, most famously to Mary at the Annunciation.

The name is used across Europe in slightly different spellings, and its length gives plenty of short forms. Gabby, Ella and Bella are all common.

The CSO counts Gabriella and Gabriela as separate names. Gabriella first reached the list in 1965, with 4 girls, but then disappeared for years. It grew through the 2000s, and its best year was 2009, when 35 girls were named Gabriella and it was number 172. It has been more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached 126th in 2023.
