The story of Gia
Gia is a short name with more than one source. It is used as a short form of the Italian names Gianna and Giada, and of Georgia, which goes back to Greek. Many parents now choose it as a full name in its own right, so there is no single meaning to give it.
It sits alongside other short girls’ names such as Mia, Lia and Ria. In Italian, “gi” before a vowel is said like the English “j”, which is why the name is JEE-a and not GHEE-a.
Gia first reached the CSO list in 2010, with 5 girls, but it only became steady from 2018. Its best year so far was 2024, when 19 girls were named Gia and it was number 227. In Northern Ireland its highest place was 179th, also in 2024.
