The story of Hallie
Hallie started out as a pet form of Harriet, which is itself the feminine of Harry, the old English pet form of Henry. Small children often find an “r” hard to say and swap in an “l”, and several English nicknames grew out of that habit: Molly and Polly from Mary, Sally from Sarah, and Hallie from Harriet. Some people also treat Hallie as a form of Hayley.
In Ireland Hallie first reached the list in 2003. It picked up after 2010 and had its best year in 2024, with 59 girls and number 84. It was number 99 in 2025. It is even more popular in Northern Ireland, where it was 57th in 2025, its highest place there.
