The story of Imogen
Imogen owes its existence to Shakespeare. It is the name of the heroine of his play Cymbeline, but the early printed text seems to have misspelled Innogen, the name he probably intended. Where Innogen comes from is less clear. One common explanation links it to a Gaelic word for a girl or maiden, related to the Irish iníon, daughter, but this is not certain.
The name has been used mostly in Britain, and it has a slightly literary, old-fashioned feel. The singer Imogen Heap is a well-known modern bearer.
In the Republic Imogen first appears in the CSO records in 1979 and has stayed a quiet choice, at its best number 255 in 2020. It has been more popular in Northern Ireland, which has recorded more Imogens since 1998 than the Republic has since 1964, and where it reached number 103 in 2007.
