The story of Jamie
Jamie is a pet form of James, with the -ie ending that is typical of Scots. James itself comes, through Latin, from the Hebrew name Jacob. Jamie has long been given as a full name, and since the middle of the twentieth century it has also been used for girls, especially in the United States.
In Ireland Jamie was first recorded for boys in 1972. It rose steadily and reached number 10 in 2006 with 494 babies. It was even more popular in Northern Ireland, where its best position was 8th, in 2005.
For girls it has always been much less common, but it has been used steadily since the late 1970s. Its best year for girls was 1986, with 46 babies.
