The story of Julian
Julian comes from the Latin Iulianus, a name meaning “of Julius” or “belonging to the Julius family”. The Julii were one of the great families of ancient Rome, and the name Julius is best known through Julius Caesar. Where the family name itself came from is not certain.
The name was carried by a fourth-century Roman emperor, Julian, remembered as a philosopher. In medieval England it was also given to girls, as with the writer and mystic Julian of Norwich. Today it is used as a boys’ name across much of Europe and the Americas, and the pet form Jules is common.
Julian has been given in Ireland throughout the CSO records without ever becoming common. Its best rank came early, at number 129 in 1970, while its busiest year was 2012, with 29 boys. In 2025, 11 boys were named Julian.
