The story of Kyra

Kyra has no single agreed origin. It is often linked to the medieval Greek word kyra, meaning “lady”, which was also the name of a Greek Orthodox saint. Another explanation traces it to Cyra, a feminine form of the Persian name Cyrus. In English-speaking countries it may also simply be taken as a spelling of Keira or Kira.

Whatever its roots, Kyra is a steady rather than a showy name in Ireland. It first appears in the CSO records in 1971, but it stayed very rare until around 2000. Since then it has been given to somewhere between a dozen and two dozen girls most years. Its best year was 2023, when 24 girls were named Kyra and it reached number 190.

The name is known in Northern Ireland too, where 7 girls were named Kyra in 2025. The CSO counts Kira and Keira as separate names.
