The story of Logan
Logan began as a Scottish surname, taken from a place of that name in Ayrshire. The place name comes from the Gaelic lagan, a small hollow or dell. In Ireland Logan is also found as a surname in its own right, as a variant of Lohan. As a first name it has been used since at least the nineteenth century, and it became popular in the English-speaking world in the 2000s.
Logan first reached the CSO list in 1997. It climbed fast, and its best year was 2017, when 175 boys were named Logan and it reached number 41. It has fallen back since, to number 121 in 2025.
The name has been far more popular in Northern Ireland. It reached 10th there in 2017, and it still ranked 69th in 2025, well ahead of its place south of the border.
