Louie began as a pet form of Louis, and occasionally of Louise and Louisa. It is said exactly like Louis, but without the silent “s” that often puzzles people. Louis itself comes through French from a Frankish name usually explained as “famous in battle”.
The spelling grew up in Britain, where Louie has become a name in its own right. In England and Wales it has lately even ranked above Louis, while in the United States Louis is still far more common.
Louie first reached the CSO list in 1988 but stayed rare until the 2010s. It has been rising since, and 2025 was its best year so far, with 55 boys, putting it at number 103. It is more popular in Northern Ireland, where it reached 74th in 2024. The CSO counts Louis and Lewis separately.
