The story of Margot
Margot is a French pet form of Marguerite, the French version of Margaret. It has long been used as a name in its own right. Through Margaret it goes back to a Greek word for a pearl. Margo and Margaux are other spellings, and the CSO counts each separately.
A few Irish girls were given the name in the 1960s, and then it disappeared from the lists until the 2010s.
Its recent rise has been quick. It peaked in 2023, with 34 babies, when it reached number 139 on the combined list. In 2025, 30 girls were named Margot. It is more popular in Northern Ireland, where it was number 52 in 2025.
