The story of Miguel
Miguel is the Spanish and Portuguese form of Michael. Michael comes from the Hebrew Mikha’el, a question meaning “who is like God?”, and it is the name of the archangel who leads the heavenly armies against the dragon in the Book of Revelation. The name is found across Spain, Portugal and Latin America, from the writer Miguel de Cervantes to countless families today.
The Irish form of Michael is Mícheál, so Miguel is a close cousin of one of the most traditional names in Ireland.
Miguel first appears in the CSO records in 1983, but it stayed very rare until the 2000s and has grown slowly since then. Its biggest year was 2024, with 17 boys, when it reached number 251, and 11 boys were named Miguel in 2025.
