The story of Mikey

Mikey is a pet form of Michael, made from the short form Mike with the friendly -y ending. Michael is a Hebrew name, usually explained as a question, “who is like God?”. It is the name of an archangel, and in Ireland Michael has been one of the most common boys’ names for generations. Mikey is sometimes also used as a nickname for Mitchell.

Like Joey, Billy and Frankie, Mikey has moved from the playground to the birth certificate.

Mikey first reached the CSO list in 2001. It has become more common in recent years, and 2024 was its biggest year so far, with 30 boys and a place at number 165. The CSO counts Mikey, Mickey and Michael as separate names. It is used much less in Northern Ireland, where it has only rarely made the list.
