The story of Naomi
Naomi comes from a Hebrew name meaning “my pleasantness”, built on noam, pleasantness, with an ending meaning “my”. Quite separately, Naomi is also a Japanese girls’ name, which just happens to sound the same.
In the Bible, Naomi is the mother-in-law of Ruth. In the Book of Ruth, Naomi loses her husband and sons, and her widowed daughter-in-law Ruth refuses to leave her, going with her back to Bethlehem.
Naomi was given in small numbers when the CSO records begin and grew slowly after that. Its biggest year was 1993, with 82 girls, when it reached number 76. It has stayed fairly steady since, with 31 girls in 2025. In Northern Ireland it reached number 34 in 1997.
