The story of Ronnie
Ronnie began as a pet form of Ronald, made with the familiar -ie ending. Ronald is a Scottish name that goes back to the Old Norse Rögnvaldr. For girls, Ronnie can also be short for Veronica, but in Ireland it is given almost only to boys.
Like Freddie, Alfie and Teddy, Ronnie is part of a wave of friendly, old-fashioned short forms that parents now choose as full names.
Ronnie first appears in the CSO records in 1976, but it was very rare until recently. It has risen quickly in the 2020s. Its biggest year was 2024, with 18 boys, when it reached number 238, and 14 boys were named Ronnie in 2025. It is more popular in Northern Ireland, where 15 boys were named Ronnie in 2025, putting it at number 149, its best rank there.
