The story of Teagan
Teagan has two separate roots. As a girl’s name it is usually treated as a variant of the Welsh Tegan, from a word meaning pet or darling. As a boy’s name it can be a small form of the Irish Tadhg, a name linked to the word for a poet. It is also found as a surname. Some sources give meanings such as “beautiful”, but these are less well supported.
In Ireland Teagan is almost always a girl’s name. It first reached the list in 2001 and grew quickly through that decade. Its biggest year was 2011, when 42 girls were named Teagan, and its best rank was number 143 in 2013. It has become much rarer since, with 4 girls in 2025. The CSO counts Tegan as a separate name. In Northern Ireland its best rank was number 171 in 2008.
