The story of Teo
Teo is used as a name on its own and as a short form of longer names such as Teodor, Teofilo, Teoman and Mateo. Several of these go back to the Greek theos, God. Teodor, a form of Theodore, means “gift of God”, and Mateo, the Spanish form of Matthew, has a similar meaning from Hebrew. Teo is common in southern and eastern Europe, and it sits close to Theo, the English short form of Theodore.
The name first reached the Irish list in 2008. Its best year was 2024, with 14 boys, placing it at number 279, and 8 boys were named Teo in 2025. It is still rare in Northern Ireland, where its best rank was number 352 in 2022. The CSO counts Theo as a separate name.
