The story of Vincent
Vincent comes from the Roman name Vincentius, built on the Latin vincere, to conquer. So the name means “conquering”. It reached English through French.
Several saints carried the name. The best known in Ireland is Vincent de Paul, a French priest who worked among the poor in the 1600s, and whose name lives on in the charity many people simply call “Vincent’s”. The painter Vincent van Gogh is the name’s most famous modern bearer.
Vincent was already a well-used name in Ireland when the CSO records begin, and it was number 42 in 1964. Its biggest year was 1966, with 165 boys. It stayed in the top 100 until the late 1980s and then eased back, and today a small group of boys are given it each year. In Northern Ireland its highest place was 167th, in 2002.
