The story of Aiden
Aiden is a spelling of Aidan, which is the English form of the Irish name Aodhán. Aodhán is a small form of Aodh, an old name meaning “fire”, so Aiden is usually explained as “little fire”. Aodhán was also the name of the Irish monk who founded the monastery on Lindisfarne.
Aiden is simply another way of writing the same name, and a few girls have been given it abroad.
In Ireland, Aiden has been given steadily throughout the CSO records. It was at its highest in the late 1960s, reaching number 92 in 1968, and 44 boys were named Aiden in 1969. In 2025 there were 35, and it was number 145 on the combined count. The CSO counts Aiden and Aidan as separate names, and this page covers the Aiden spelling only.
