The story of Alexandru
Alexandru is the Romanian form of Alexander. It comes, through Latin, from the Greek Alexandros, usually explained as “defender of people”, from words meaning to defend and man. The most famous bearer of the Greek name was Alexander the Great.
In Romania and Moldova Alexandru is a long-established and popular name, and it even appears in place names there. Romanian also has pet forms, but Alex is the one most likely to be heard in Ireland.
Alexandru first appears in the CSO records in 1999. It has been given steadily since, with a best year of 2019, when 15 boys were named Alexandru. In 2025 there were 9. The CSO counts Alexander and Alex as separate names, so they are not included in these figures.
