The story of Stefan
Stefan is the form of Stephen used across much of Europe, in German, Polish, Serbian, Swedish and other languages. It goes back to the Greek stephanos, a crown or a wreath like those given to winners at the games. Saint Stephen, remembered in Ireland on 26 December, carried the name into Christian use.
In Ireland it first reached the CSO list in 1974. Its best rank was number 154 in 1989, and its busiest year was 1996, with 21 babies. It has been a small but steady choice since, and 9 boys were named Stefan in 2025.
The CSO counts Stefan, Stephen and Steven as separate names. Stephen is much the most common of them in Ireland. In Northern Ireland Stefan’s best rank was number 143 in 1997.
