The story of Lukas
Lukas is one way of writing the Greek name Loukas, the name of the gospel writer known in English as Luke. It goes back to the Latin Lucas, usually explained as “a man from Lucania”, a region in southern Italy. Lukas with a k is the usual spelling in German and several other European languages, while English tends to use Lucas or Luke.
In Ireland the name first reached three babies a year in 1994. It grew through the 2000s and had its biggest year in 2012, with 42 boys, and its best rank was number 157 in 2013. In 2025, 16 boys were named Lukas.
The CSO counts Lukas, Lucas and Luke as separate names. Together they make the sound one of the most familiar boys’ names in Ireland, and Lukas is the least common of the three.
