The story of Charlie
Charlie began as a pet form of Charles and is now often given as a full name. For girls it grew up as a short form of Charlotte or Charlene, and it is used that way too, though less often than for boys.
In Ireland Charlie first appears in the CSO boys’ lists in 1983. It rose through the 2000s and reached number 6 in 2022, its best rank. Its biggest year was 2012, with 432 boys. It is a strong name in Northern Ireland too, where it was fourth in 2025.
For girls it is much rarer, but the use is real: it has been on the girls’ list every year since 1999, with a high of 29 girls in 2014.
