ZAK

The story of Zach

Zach is a short form of Zachary and Zachariah. Both come from the Hebrew Zechariah, a name usually explained as “God has remembered”. Several people in the Bible carry it, among them an Old Testament prophet and, in the Gospel of Luke, the father of John the Baptist.

Zach began as a nickname, but in Ireland it is now registered as a first name in its own right, alongside the spellings Zac and Zack.

Zach first reached the CSO list in 1993 and took off in the 2000s. Its busiest year was 2012, with 93 boys. Its best rank came later, at number 81 in 2021 on the official CSO ranking. The CSO counts Zach, Zac, Zack and Zachary as separate names, so each one looks less common than the group as a whole.
