The story of Chloe

Chloe comes from a Greek word for the fresh green shoots of plants in spring. In ancient Greece it was one of the titles of Demeter, goddess of the harvest. The name appears once in the New Testament, in Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians. It also turns up in the old Greek romance Daphnis and Chloe, and in English verse such as Strephon and Chloe by the Dublin-born Jonathan Swift.

Chloe first appears in the CSO records in 1974 and rose fast in the late 1980s. It was the most popular girls’ name in Ireland in 1998, and in 1999 it was number 1 again, with 615 girls. Northern Ireland got there first: it topped the list there in 1997. It is less common today, at number 22 in 2025. The CSO counts Chloe, Chloé and Chloë separately; these figures combine them.
