The story of Sophie
Sophie is the French form of Sophia, a name taken from the Greek word for wisdom. It reached English through French, and it is also used as a pet form of Sophia itself.
Sophie was rare in Ireland for a long time. It first appears in the CSO records in 1967, with four girls, and fewer than 20 a year were given the name until the mid-1980s. It rose fast in the 1990s and reached number 1 in 2009, when 640 girls were named Sophie, its biggest year. It has stayed in the top ten ever since 2002.
It was also the top name in Northern Ireland in 2010, but it has fallen further there than in the Republic, and was 15th in 2025.
