The story of Alannah
Alannah is a modern name with two strands. It is a form of Alana, the feminine of Alan, given the “-nnah” ending of names like Hannah and Susannah. It is also tied to alanna, a word used in the English of Ireland when speaking to a child. That word comes from the Irish a leanbh, “O child”.
Bearers include the Canadian singer Alannah Myles and the Irish model Alannah Beirne.
Alannah first reached the Irish list in 1983 and rose fast in the 1990s. Its best year for rank was 2003, when it was number 49, and the most girls were given it in 2008, with 130. It was number 103 in 2025. It is much less common in Northern Ireland, where its best place was 131st.
