The story of Zachary
Zachary is the English form of Zechariah, a Hebrew name usually explained as “God has remembered”. It reached English through the Greek and Latin Zacharias. Several people in the Bible bear the name, among them one of the Old Testament prophets.
The name had a revival among English Protestants after the Reformation. The historian William Camden noted in 1605 that some families were choosing biblical names like Zachary and Malachy.
Zachary first reached the CSO list in 1976. Its best rank came in 1999, at number 156, and its biggest year was 2012, with 41 boys. The CSO counts Zach and Zac as separate names. Zachary has done better in Northern Ireland, where it reached number 87 in 2015.
