The story of Éanna
Éanna is an old Irish name, and Enda is the form most people know in English. Its meaning has not been worked out with any certainty, so it is left as uncertain here.
The name belongs above all to Saint Éanna of Aran, who died around 530. Tradition says he was a fighting man until his sister, the abbess Fanchea, turned him towards the Church. He founded a monastery at Killeaney on Inis Mór and is often called the father of Irish monasticism. His feast day is 21 March. Well-known bearers of the English form include the former Taoiseach Enda Kenny and the playwright Enda Walsh.
The CSO did not record fadas before 2018, so older figures combine Éanna and Eanna, and Enda is counted as a separate name. Éanna has grown steadily, and 2025 was its best year yet, with 66 boys and number 89 counting both spellings. It is rarer in Northern Ireland, where it was 175th in 2025.
