The story of Alicja

Alicja is the Polish form of Alice. Like Alice, it goes back to the Old High German Adalheidis, the name that also gave us Adelaide. Its first part means noble, and the second is usually explained as kind or type. The short form used in Poland is Ala.

The spelling follows Polish rules, so it is said a-LEETS-ya, not the way English speakers first read it.

Alicja first appears in the CSO records in 2006, as many Polish families settled in Ireland. It rose quickly and its biggest year was 2012, when 54 girls were named Alicja, putting it at number 114. It has been given less often since, and 7 girls were named Alicja in 2025. In Northern Ireland its best rank was number 195 in 2015. The CSO counts Alicja separately from Alice and Alicia.
