The story of Amber
Amber is taken from the word for fossilised tree resin, the golden stone long used in jewellery. The word came into English through French and Latin, and it goes back to an Arabic word for ambergris, a quite different substance. The name of the yellowish-orange colour comes from the same word.
As a girl’s name Amber was especially popular in the English-speaking world in the 1980s and 1990s.
In Ireland Amber first reached the list in 1970, but it only became common in the 1990s. It had its best year in 2014, with 127 girls and number 53. It was number 148 on the CSO list in 2025. Northern Ireland followed a similar path, and the name did best there in the same year, when it was 50th.
