Andy is a pet form of Andrew, made by clipping the name and adding the familiar -y ending. Andrew itself comes from the Greek Andreas, built on the Greek word for a man, and is usually explained as “manly” or “brave”.
For most of its life Andy has been a nickname rather than a name on a birth certificate. It is also used now and then as a short form of Andrea, for girls.
As a full name in Ireland, Andy first reached the CSO list in 1992, and it has been given to a small but steady group of boys ever since. Its best rank was number 236 in 2000, and its biggest year was 2013, with 20 boys. It is much rarer in Northern Ireland, where only 14 boys have been registered as Andy since 1999.
