The story of Robbie

Robbie is a pet form of Robert, made with the familiar “-ie” ending. Robert is an old Germanic name, usually explained as “bright fame”, that came to Britain and Ireland with the Normans. The pet form has long been especially popular in Scotland, where Rabbie is another version.

Today Robbie is often given as a full name rather than as a nickname for Robert. Well-known Irish bearers include the footballer Robbie Keane.

Robbie first appears in the CSO records in 1992, and it has held a fairly steady place since. Its best rank so far came recently, at number 154 in 2025 on the combined list, when 32 boys were named Robbie. It was more popular in Northern Ireland in the 2000s, reaching number 86 in 2003.
