Turkish, from ay (moon) with the ending -da (in, on).
Say it right
EYEda
In Turkish "ay" sounds like the English word "eye". Some Irish families say AY-da instead.
The story of Ayda
Ayda is a Turkish girl’s name. It is built from ay, the Turkish word for moon, and the ending -da, which means in or on, so it is usually given as “in the moon”. It is a separate name from Aida, the heroine of Verdi’s opera, and from Ada, though the three are easy to mix up.
The best-known bearer in Ireland and Britain is Ayda Field, the Turkish-American actor and television personality, who is married to the singer Robbie Williams.
Ayda first reached the Irish list in 2009 and stayed rare until 2018, when 32 girls were given it. Its best year was 2022, with 65 girls and number 84. It has eased since, and in Northern Ireland its best place was 82nd, in 2020.
