The story of Bonnie
Bonnie comes from the Scots word bonnie, meaning pretty or fine. The word may go back through French bon, good, to the Latin bonus. Its use as a first name began as a nickname in the United States, and it was helped along by Bonnie Blue Butler, the daughter of Scarlett and Rhett in Gone with the Wind.
In Ireland it reached the CSO list in 1991 but stayed rare until the 2010s. It peaked in 2022 with 135 babies. Its best rank came the following year: number 35 in 2023 on our combined count, and 33rd on the CSO’s own list. Its best in Northern Ireland was 28th in 2024.
