The story of Cruz
Cruz is the Spanish and Portuguese word for a cross, both the Christian cross and a crossing of roads or lines. It began as a surname in Castile in Spain and spread with Spanish and Portuguese speakers across the Americas and the Philippines. It is still far more common as a surname than as a first name.
As a first name it has caught on mainly in the United States and Britain. One reason is Cruz Beckham, the youngest son of David and Victoria Beckham, born in 2005.
In Ireland Cruz first appears in the CSO records in 2005. It has grown steadily since, and its best year so far was 2023, with 15 boys. It is used in Northern Ireland too, where 6 boys were named Cruz in 2025.
