Brodie began as a Scottish surname, taken from the place of that name in Moray, home of Brodie Castle. The meaning is uncertain. It is probably Gaelic or Pictish, and suggestions include words for a ditch or muddy ground, a level piece of land, or a link to the Pictish royal name Bridei. None of these is settled.
As a first name it sits with other easy-going two-syllable names like Cody and Ollie. Brody is another spelling of the same name.
Brodie first reached the CSO list for boys in 2006. Its best year was 2022, with 27 boys and a place at number 189, and there were 21 in 2025. The CSO counts Brody as a separate name.
