The story of Brody
Brody began as a surname, a variant spelling of the Scottish Brodie. Its meaning is not certain. One suggestion links it to a Scottish Gaelic word for a ditch or muddy ground, but that is far from settled. There is also a Hungarian and Polish surname, Bródy, meaning “from Bród”, which has nothing to do with the Scottish one.
Like Cody, Brody moved from surname to first name in the English-speaking world, and it is used almost only for boys.
Brody is one of the newer names on the Irish list. It first reached three or more boys in a single year in 2007 and climbed quickly. Its best year was 2021, with 75 boys and a place at number 86. It has done even better in Northern Ireland, where its best place was number 73 in 2020, and it still ranks higher there than in the Republic.
